The compressive strength is obtained by means of a compressive test (ASTM E9).

A cylinder specimen is fabricated. Utilizing the same equipment for a tensile test, a uniaxial compression load is applied as shown by the arrows. Instead of stretching, the specimen is shortened and spreads laterally. A stress–strain curve can be plotted.
