Metallography (ASTM E3) is the study of the structure of metals, typically using the microscope to view objects. A small sample is selected carefully
considering location and orientation, mounted and polished. Depending upon the material it is left unetched or etched with a variety of different etchants that bring out the structure which is viewed from 10X to 1000X. Photomicrographs (ASTM E883) are available upon request.
Some of the structures examined are:
Banding
Decarb
Grain Boundaries
IGO/IGA
Nodularity
Phases- including ferrite, pearlite, martensite, austenite, etc.
