Sample Prep: Machining Department

The machining department at Tensile Testing Metallurgical Laboratory consists of a variety machines including:

• Heavy Cut Milling Machines
• CNC Machining Centers
• CNC Lathes
• Grinders, Sanders, Polishers, etc.

Modern equipment allows us to machine specimens with precision and accuracy according to the tolerances of specifications. After a sample is sawed into a bar, it is turned round and then machined into a tensile bar (see picture on bottom-left). A tensile can be made from a part as small as 3/4" in length, as shown (bottom right picture) compared to a regular .500" tensile.
